Pet-care franchises include retail stores, grooming businesses, daycare facilities and overnight boarding operations. These models require different premises, staffing and daily routines. Start by deciding which work you want to manage, then investigate the specific franchise and local market. A recognizable brand does not guarantee customers or profit.
Compare the pet-care business models
- Grooming: Compare appointment capacity, groomer recruitment, equipment, cleaning procedures and customer communication.
- Boarding: Investigate overnight supervision, holiday staffing, accommodation capacity, emergency procedures and facility requirements.
- Daycare: Ask about dog assessment, group supervision, staffing schedules, cleaning and how capacity is managed.
- Pet food retail and delivery: This model combines selling pet food and supplies with customer service in a local market. For example, Pet Wants offers a retail-store franchise with delivery, shipping and grooming services, as described in its April 9, 2026 FDD, Item 1. Its initial delivery phase leads into a required store operation, giving buyers a distinct model to compare with boarding and daycare businesses. Our profile explains the brand history, investment, training and ownership opportunity.
Pet-care brands to research
These examples illustrate different service mixes; they are not a ranking or a promise of availability in your territory.
- Hounds Town USA: Its April 30, 2026 FDD, Item 1, describes interactive dog-care facilities offering daycare, boarding, grooming and other pet-industry services and products.
- EarthWise Pet: Its official service page describes pet supplies, grooming and self-wash. Confirm the services included in the particular franchise format; do not assume boarding and daycare are part of the offering.
- Dogtopia: The brand website describes daycare, boarding and spa services. Investigate the applicable facility and operating requirements before comparing it with a retail store.
- Pet Supplies Plus: Its official grooming page describes grooming and self-serve wash options at participating locations. Verify local services rather than assuming every store offers the same combination.
Additional pet-business profiles to investigate include All American Pet Resorts, Aussie Pet Mobile, Wag N’ Wash, The Dog Stop, Splash and Dash. Compare the services, facilities and staffing described for each offering before deciding which model fits your plans.
Research local demand before choosing a site
Map competing stores, groomers, boarding facilities and daycare businesses within the area customers would realistically travel. Compare their hours, booking availability, prices and services. Interview prospective customers about what they use today and what would make them switch. Treat national industry claims as background, not proof that your location will attract enough customers.
For each candidate property, investigate access, parking, visibility, permitted use, sound, ventilation, plumbing and the cost of adapting the space. Confirm requirements with the relevant local authorities and the franchisor before committing to a lease.
Build a budget around the actual offering
Request the applicable current Franchise Disclosure Document and review the initial fees, estimated opening investment and ongoing charges. The FTC’s guide to buying a franchise explains how to examine disclosures, costs and franchise relationships.
Separate opening costs from operating expenses. Your working budget should account for premises, equipment, inventory where applicable, wages, insurance, utilities, cleaning, marketing, technology and franchise charges. Ask which items the franchisor supplies and which you must arrange or pay for yourself. Compare financing terms and repayment obligations with your available cash.
Build scenarios using different customer volumes, appointment utilization, staffing levels and inventory costs. Gross sales are not take-home income. Investigate any earnings representation in the applicable disclosure rather than relying on an advertisement, testimonial or another owner’s best month.
Check training, support and the owner’s workload
Ask who must attend initial training, what practical instruction is included, how staff are trained and who pays travel or additional training expenses. Confirm opening assistance, continuing support, software requirements and marketing obligations in the documents for the offering.
Discuss the expected owner schedule with the franchisor and current franchisees. Ask about weekends, holidays, staff absences and emergency coverage. Loving animals is useful motivation, but managing employees, service standards, customer concerns and business records is also part of the work.
Speak with current and former franchisees
Use franchisee contacts in the disclosure to ask about opening delays, staffing, customer acquisition, supplier arrangements and the support actually received. Speak with several operators and, where possible, former owners. Online reviews can suggest questions, but they do not replace these conversations or a review of the agreement.
Plan service quality and growth carefully
Before opening, define how staff will handle bookings, customer instructions, cleaning, incident reporting and follow-up. Review customer feedback and repeat bookings alongside expenses and staffing capacity. Evaluate any proposed additional service or location against the franchise agreement, available resources and actual operating results.
Start your shortlist with the linked profiles, then request the current offering documents for the specific model and territory. Keep a written comparison of services, owner duties, support, costs and unresolved questions.
