Drive-Thru Coffee Franchises: Site, Budget & Operations

Jul 25, 2024 | 0 comments

A drive-thru coffee franchise needs more than a small building and a busy road. Vehicle access, queue space, local approvals, staffing, and a workable budget all matter.

Use this guide to evaluate the format, then compare brands in our coffee franchise buyer guide.

What is a drive-thru coffee business?

Customers order and collect drinks while staying in their vehicles. Some locations also offer walk-up service or seating. Confirm the specific model a franchisor approves for your market.

Ziggi’s Coffee and Scooter’s Coffee have official franchise-development pages for buyers to research. That does not mean every site or applicant will qualify.

Check vehicle access before signing a lease

  • Can customers enter and leave safely?
  • Is there enough space for waiting vehicles?
  • Do nearby intersections make access difficult?
  • Can deliveries, employees, and service vehicles use the property?
  • What local approvals and site changes are required?

Confirm site requirements with the franchisor and qualified local professionals before committing to a property.

Compare the full drive-thru opening budget

A reduced seating area may change costs, but site work, utilities, construction, and equipment can still be substantial. Compare actual estimates for the model you intend to open.

  • Franchise fee and training expenses
  • Property costs and deposits
  • Site preparation, utilities, and construction
  • Coffee, food, ordering, and payment equipment
  • Recruitment, insurance, inventory, and marketing
  • Working cash and financing payments

Plan staffing and service flow

Ask operators how they schedule peak periods and train staff. Compare the menu, preparation steps, equipment capacity, and order accuracy. A quick-service format still requires management and customer service.

Review how equipment failures, staff absences, and changing demand would affect your operating plan.

Understand the ownership offer

A coffee chain with drive-thru locations is not necessarily selling franchises. Dutch Bros states that it no longer offers new franchises. Starbucks uses company-operated and licensed stores.

Our Starbucks and Dutch Bros guide explains the difference. For a franchise option, start with the Ziggi’s Coffee profile and verify current territory availability.

Questions for existing drive-thru operators

  • How long did site approval and construction take?
  • Which opening costs were unexpected?
  • How did the location affect demand?
  • How many people are needed during busy periods?
  • What equipment needs the most service?
  • How much time does the owner spend in the business?

Is a drive-thru better than a seated cafe?

The answer depends on the location, customer habits, menu, and economics. Compare both formats using your local market and budget. Neither guarantees higher profit.

Use our coffee franchise owner checklist to organize that comparison.
