How to Choose a Coffee Franchise: An Owner Checklist

Jul 25, 2024 | 0 comments

Choosing a coffee franchise takes more than comparing familiar brand names. You need a business that fits your budget, location, working style, and goals.

Use this checklist after reading our coffee franchise brand and format guide. This page focuses on evaluating ownership, rather than ranking brands.

1. Define the job you want to do

Ask what owners actually do each week. Does the role involve serving customers, managing a team, finding sites, or supervising several locations? A manager-led business still needs oversight.

Write down the time you can commit, the skills you bring, and the work you would need to hire others to do.

2. Set a complete investment limit

Separate available cash from total project cost. Include equipment, construction, rent deposits, opening inventory, training travel, insurance, marketing, and operating reserves.

Ask which expenses the quoted investment includes. Add financing payments and personal living needs to your planning. Our franchise budget guide explains why minimum cash requirements differ from total investment.

3. Compare formats before brands

A seated cafe, drive-thru, kiosk, and mobile coffee business have different site and operating needs. A smaller store does not automatically cost less or earn more.

For vehicle access, queue space, and approvals, use our drive-thru coffee checklist.

4. Test the local market

  • Who are the likely customers?
  • When and how will they visit?
  • Can they enter and leave the property easily?
  • What competing coffee and food businesses serve them?
  • Does the lease support the hours and use you need?

Visit candidate areas at different times of day. Use local evidence rather than national popularity alone.

5. Check what support is promised

Ask about site approval, training, hiring help, opening support, and ongoing coaching. Find out who provides each service, when it is available, and whether there is an extra charge.

6. Talk with franchise owners

Ask owners in several markets what they spent, how opening went, and what work the business requires. Include newer operators as well as established owners. Where possible, speak with former owners too.

  • What costs were higher than expected?
  • How difficult was recruitment?
  • How useful was the training?
  • What would you change about the site?
  • Would you invest again?

7. Review financial claims carefully

A claim that a brand has “high profitability” is not enough. Ask what evidence supports it and which expenses are included. Gross sales do not equal owner income.

Build your own forecast with qualified financial help. Model slower sales and higher costs, not only the case you hope to achieve.

8. Confirm that the opportunity is available

Not every coffee chain sells new franchises. Dutch Bros says it no longer offers them, and Starbucks operates through company-run and licensed stores. Read our Starbucks and Dutch Bros ownership guide for that distinction.
