Is Starbucks Open to Franchising?

Jul 25, 2024 | 0 comments

Starbucks says it is not accepting applications for franchisees at this time, according to its official investor FAQ, reviewed October 14, 2026. For a U.S. buyer researching a coffee business, that means there is no standard Starbucks franchise application to treat like an available franchise purchase.

Why some Starbucks stores have different operators

Starbucks operates company-run and licensed coffeehouses. In its March 2026 explanation of its U.S. licensed business, the company discusses locations in hospitals, hotels, grocery stores, airports and campuses. These settings help explain why a Starbucks may operate inside another business or institution.

The presence of licensed stores does not establish that any individual can buy one, select any location or pay a published universal “Starbucks franchise cost.” Ask Starbucks directly about any proposed licensing arrangement and its eligibility requirements. Avoid using an unrelated coffee franchise’s fee or an online estimate as a Starbucks opening budget.

What about international Starbucks locations?

Keep the market specific. Starbucks’ 2026 UK and EMEA report describes licensed and franchised operations in that region. Those arrangements do not establish an open U.S. franchise offering, and this article should not be read as a claim that every Starbucks worldwide has the same ownership structure.

Research other coffee businesses by actual availability

Dutch Bros is sometimes included in lists of coffee franchises to buy, but its official franchise FAQ says it no longer offers that option. Check a brand’s current policy before spending time estimating a purchase price.

One disclosed franchise example is Ziggi’s Coffee. Its March 31, 2026 FDD describes separate drive-thru, café and mobile formats. That makes format selection an important part of comparing the business; it does not establish availability at a particular site.

Questions for your coffee-business shortlist

For each opportunity, identify who operates the store, which agreement is proposed and what the owner is responsible for. Ask about location approval, staff training, supplier requirements and the time expected from the owner. Obtain a complete opening and operating budget for the specific format.

Compare the daily work as carefully as the brand. Does the model fit your interest in managing a team, serving customers and maintaining consistent operations? Our coffee investment guide provides a framework for those questions. You can also contact FranchiseTop40 to discuss your preferred ownership role.
