Card My Yard is a home-based yard greeting franchise that turns birthdays, graduations, new arrivals and community milestones into colorful outdoor celebrations. Owners prepare personalized sign displays, deliver and install them at customers’ homes or businesses, and return to remove them. The model uses a home office and sign-storage area, with an approved small warehouse as another option; a retail storefront is not required. For a creative, organized owner who enjoys local relationships and hands-on service, Card My Yard pairs a recognizable celebration brand with an initial sign package, training and an online ordering system.

About Card My Yard

From an Austin idea to a yard greeting franchise

Amy Arnold and Jessica Stanley founded Card My Yard in Austin, Texas, in 2014. The two mothers met through a women’s Bible study and developed a way to help neighbors celebrate important occasions with large, personalized yard messages. Working with their husbands, they turned a local celebration service into a business centered on community connections and memorable surprises.

The original business provided the operating foundation for franchising, which began in June 2017 through predecessor Card My Yard Franchising, LLC. Its concept combined reusable letters and graphics with a service that handled installation and removal for the customer. Birthdays and graduations became part of a broader offering that also serves anniversaries, baby announcements, school activities and business occasions.

Development of the franchise system

CMY Franchising, LLC was formed in September 2020. Following its parent company’s October 2020 acquisition of the Card My Yard system and brand assets, the current franchisor began offering and supporting franchises. A further ownership change in March 2024 brought the business into the Five Star Franchising group.

The brand’s development has included centralized online ordering and payment processing, digital operating materials and structured franchisee training. Those systems support locally operated businesses whose owners organize inventory, coordinate orders and create displays in their own communities.

A service business based at home

A Card My Yard franchise usually operates from the owner’s residence, with space to organize and store letters, graphics and installation supplies. An approved small warehouse is an alternative. The business sells temporary yard greeting services rather than requiring a walk-in retail shop. Owners take responsibility for preparing displays, scheduling installations, collecting signs and maintaining the inventory between bookings.

The initial investment estimate of $10,350–$18,550 covers one franchise and includes the $8,500 initial franchise fee. The initial letters and signs are included in that fee. A protected service area is defined in the agreement, generally by ZIP codes; maintaining territorial rights depends on compliance and applicable sales and royalty requirements.

Card My Yard Training and Support

Learn the service before opening

Card My Yard’s initial training takes approximately 22 hours and combines online instruction with practical tasks at the franchise location. The principal owner and any separate general manager must complete the program satisfactorily before opening. Training covers system access, establishing the location, operating standards, inventory and storage, customer communication, the order dashboard, social media and local marketing.

Owners also practice setting up yard greetings and participate in instructor-led virtual training. A mandatory review call follows the online coursework, with additional follow-up calls when needed. Initial training is provided without an additional tuition charge for the initial principal owner and general manager. Owners choosing to travel for training are responsible for their travel and related expenses.

Signs, operating tools and launch preparation

Pre-opening assistance includes electronic operating manuals, approved supplier information, storage guidance and an initial package of letters, graphics, stakes, lights and stands. Business cards, a vehicle magnet and door hangers are also part of the opening supplies described in the FDD. The franchisor reviews a proposed operating location when required.

The opening campaign gives a new owner practical opportunities to introduce the service locally. Franchisees must spend at least $250 on grand-opening marketing and complete at least 10 promotional yard greetings, along with related social media activity. Owners remain responsible for organizing the launch and meeting the franchise agreement’s opening requirements.

Support after the first celebration

Ongoing assistance includes operational evaluations, updated approved-supplier information, pricing guidance and operating advice or promotional materials developed by the franchisor. Its centralized website processes customer payments, handles the stated sales-tax reporting and payment functions, and remits net proceeds weekly.

Additional training and franchisee conventions may be required, with applicable attendance and travel expenses paid by the owner. Local relationship-building is an active part of the business: the agreement includes annual promotional yard greetings, local advertising spending and regular social media posts. The principal owner supervises operations unless a separate general manager is approved.

Why Card My Yard

Build a business around moments people want to share

A Card My Yard franchise gives an owner a service that customers can see and understand immediately: a personalized celebration waiting outside someone’s home, school or business. Each display creates an opportunity to delight a customer and introduce the brand to neighbors. Birthdays, graduations, anniversaries and community occasions provide different reasons for customers to book throughout the year.

A focused model with a modest opening investment

The home-based format avoids the need for a retail storefront, while the included starting sign inventory and structured training help an owner prepare for the work. Online ordering and centralized payment processing support the administrative side, allowing owners to concentrate on well-designed displays, reliable installation and responsive service. The published $10,000 liquid-capital requirement is distinct from the total opening investment.

For an owner who knows their community

This yard sign business can suit a creative, dependable person who enjoys organization, local networking and physical setup work. Relationships with families, schools, neighborhood groups and businesses can help build awareness. The opportunity rewards attention to scheduling, sign care and customer details; it also requires active management and consistent local marketing.

Owners pay a royalty of 25% of gross sales during the first seven months, with the greater of that percentage or applicable monthly minimums thereafter. Planning for those ongoing obligations is part of choosing a territory and building the business. For a buyer seeking a tangible service with a local identity, Card My Yard offers a clear way to turn community celebrations into an ownership opportunity.
