Online business and home-based franchise searches often bring up very different ownership models. Some businesses deliver services remotely, while others use a home office to coordinate work at customer properties. Start by separating where you do the administration from where the customer service actually happens.
Define what working from home means to you
Write down the schedule, travel and customer contact you want. Would you enjoy sales calls and remote client work, or would you prefer managing a local service team? Decide whether your goal is to avoid a storefront, reduce commuting or perform all work online. These goals do not necessarily lead to the same shortlist.
A home-based arrangement still needs a suitable workspace, reliable systems and a plan for customer communication. Check the actual franchise premises requirements and applicable local rules. Do not assume a home office removes staffing, storage, vehicle or service-location needs.
iTrip: home-office administration with property-management services
iTRIP, LLC’s FDD, issued April 30, 2026 and amended July 23, 2026, describes property management and online listing services for vacation or other rental properties, assistance finding rental guests and certain digital marketing services. Item 1 expects operation from a home office meeting its standards and describes conditions for moving to an approved commercial office.
This is a property-management model rather than a conventional travel-agent franchise. Its use of online listings does not mean that the business is simply a website. Ask how the owner will organize client relationships and the services associated with the properties. The iTrip profile provides a starting point for further research.
Expedia Cruises and Cruise Planners are separate businesses
CruiseShipCenters USA Inc., doing business as Expedia Cruises, describes a travel agency operating from an approved retail storefront in Item 1 of its March 25, 2026 FDD. Its online software supports travel-agency work, but that does not remove the storefront requirement for the offering described in this document.
Cruise Planners is a separate brand. Its official franchise website markets a home-based travel-advisor model. Do not use its description as if it were an Expedia Cruises offering or assume that similarly named travel businesses have identical requirements. Review the Expedia Cruises profile with that distinction in mind.
CertaPro: a service business, not an online-only operation
Item 1 of Certa ProPainters, Ltd.’s March 23, 2026 FDD describes residential painting and decorating services in a contractual territory. Commercial services require separate authorization and conditions described in the disclosure. The work should not be presented as a generic digital business simply because administration can use online tools.
For a painting, cleaning or pet-service opportunity, ask where service delivery occurs, who performs it and how the owner manages appointments and quality. Our CertaPro Painters profile can help you begin a more specific comparison.
Compare costs without assuming home-based means inexpensive
Use the current disclosure and agreement for initial fees, estimated investment and recurring charges. Build your operating budget around the actual model, including software, marketing, professional advice, insurance, equipment, any staffing and working capital. Removing a retail lease from one proposal does not establish the complete cost of another.
Ask how customers are acquired and how long it may take to develop the business. Distinguish tools and training from a promise of customer volume. Consider a slower period in your cash-flow planning rather than treating a flexible location as evidence of easy profit.
Test the workload and support
Request a practical description of the owner’s working week. Identify sales, administration, service oversight and customer follow-up responsibilities. Discuss required availability and whether the agreement permits the staffing or management arrangement you intend to use.
Compare promised training and continuing help with the skills you already have and the work you would need to learn. Speak with operators about their experience while keeping individual stories separate from guaranteed outcomes.
Use our franchise comparison guide to organize these questions, or contact FranchiseTop40 to discuss the ownership model that fits your goals.
