About Mr. Handyman
Mr. Handyman began in Massachusetts in 1996, founded by David Lavalle. Its original service addressed the many repair and maintenance tasks that homeowners need completed but may not have the time or skills to handle themselves. The brand developed around a locally managed team of service professionals working under a recognizable name.
Service Brands International acquired the concept in 2000, when franchising began. That distinction matters: 1996 is the brand’s founding year, while 2000 marks the development of its franchise network. Residential repair and maintenance remained central as the business also served commercial customers.
In June 2015, Dwyer Group acquired Service Brands International, bringing Mr. Handyman and Molly Maid into its portfolio. Mr. Handyman is now part of Neighborly, alongside other home-service franchise brands. Its current franchise model emphasizes business leadership, customer relationships and managing skilled staff, supported by shared resources and a network of fellow owners.
Mr. Handyman Training and Support
Mr. Handyman’s Sure Start program prepares owners to launch their businesses, with training in business operations and systems. The current franchise website makes an important distinction: trade-skills training is not provided to owners or their employees. Owners lead the business and recruit skilled service professionals rather than relying on the franchise program to teach repair trades.
After launch, a dedicated Franchise Business Coach provides guidance and operating practices. Online training resources support owners and employees, while regional and national meetings offer opportunities to exchange ideas with other franchisees. Business software and technology help with administrative work.
Published marketing support includes local websites, online advertising, social media, email campaigns, customer feedback monitoring, retention programs and performance tracking. Neighborly also offers access to its ProTradeNet vendor program, with opportunities for discounts and rebates. These resources complement the owner’s responsibility for local customer relationships and team leadership.
Why Mr. Handyman
Mr. Handyman may suit a business-minded owner who wants to build and manage a local service team. The brand seeks relationship-building, leadership, sales and marketing capabilities; personal handyman experience is not its central ownership requirement.
The breadth of home repair and maintenance work creates a service offering around customers’ ongoing property needs. Owners can combine local relationships with a recognized brand, established business systems and Neighborly’s wider network. It is an active management opportunity for someone who enjoys coordinating people and delivering customer service, rather than a promise of passive income or guaranteed profitability.
