The best franchise to open depends on your resources, experience, preferred role and local market. Comparing business models is more useful than treating a familiar brand or a list of popular franchises as a promise of success.
Restaurant franchises
Taco Bell’s March 26, 2026 Traditional FDD describes a restaurant offering Mexican-style food for take-out and on-premises eating. McDonald’s official U.S. franchising site presents its opportunity around restaurant ownership and team leadership. These are examples of restaurant models to investigate, rather than a profitability ranking.
For any restaurant opportunity, compare the applicable format, premises, equipment, staffing, operating hours, training and supply requirements. Examine gross sales separately from the costs of food, labor, occupancy and franchise fees. Confirm whether the opportunity involves a new restaurant or acquisition of an existing operation.
Fitness franchises
Anytime Fitness’s official franchise site describes a gym ownership opportunity and a process that includes reviewing its FDD. Evaluate its actual requirements rather than assuming that low membership prices imply low start-up costs.
When comparing fitness businesses, investigate premises, equipment, staffing, membership acquisition and retention, local competition and the time needed to supervise operations. Assess any training and additional service offerings using the applicable disclosure document.
Home-based travel businesses
On their official websites, Cruise Planners and Dream Vacations describe home-based travel agency franchise models. Review each offering separately, including the work of finding clients, planning trips and supporting bookings.
A home-based format still requires an operating budget and a customer-acquisition plan. Ask when commissions are earned and paid, how cancellations affect them, and what technology, marketing and continuing charges apply. Compare the actual workload with the flexibility you want.
Property management
Real Property Management‘s amended 2026 FDD describes a business providing property management services, including rent collection and maintenance coordination. Evaluate the property types, licensing requirements, client-fund processes and staffing needed in your proposed market.
Management agreements can create continuing service relationships, but owner retention, the cost of acquiring accounts and the workload per property require investigation. Rent collected on behalf of a client is not the management company’s profit.
Retail and business services
The UPS Store’s official franchise site describes its store ownership opportunity and notes that products, services and operating hours can vary by location. Request the disclosure document for the particular format under consideration.
For a premises-based service business, compare the location, lease, staffing, equipment, service mix and local customer demand. A recognizable brand does not guarantee steady revenue or financial stability for an individual operator.
Compare the complete commitment
Separate the franchise fee, total opening investment, required available cash and ongoing costs. Read the FDD’s investment and fee schedules, support obligations, territory provisions and owner-involvement requirements alongside the agreement.
Borrowing can provide funding, but it adds repayment obligations rather than reducing the underlying business costs. Build a plan that includes working capital, owner living expenses and a slower-than-expected start. Compare franchise ownership with an independent business using the same assumptions.
