About Kilwins

Kilwins Chocolates Franchise, Inc. was incorporated in Michigan in March 1981 and has franchised stores since that time. Its headquarters are in Petoskey, Michigan. The franchise system provides approved recipes, ingredients, operating procedures, customer service standards, inventory practices, training and marketing resources for stores operating under the Kilwins name.

The Full-Line Store sells a broader assortment of chocolates, ice cream, fudge and other confections, with a kitchen used to prepare approved made-in-store products. Scoops & Sweets concentrates on ice cream and a limited selection of pre-packaged chocolates without a kitchen. Store format and location shape the product mix and operating requirements. Sales and operations in some locations, including tourist areas, may be seasonal.

The 2026 investment estimate is $484,638–$880,295 for a Full-Line Store and $405,045–$522,096 for Scoops & Sweets, excluding real estate costs. The standard initial franchise fee is $45,000. The low end of each investment schedule reflects a reduced $35,000 fee available under specified additional-store or qualified veteran provisions. Each format’s budget includes a $27,000 site development fee, construction, equipment, inventory, signage, opening marketing, training expenses and additional funds for three months.

The official franchise website, checked October 16, 2026, lists $225,000 in required liquid capital. These applicant qualifications are separate from the estimated initial investment.

Kilwins Training and Support

The required owner or operating partner and the full-time store manager must complete initial training. Up to four people may attend the initial program, with additional attendees subject to a fee. Training is generally conducted at the Petoskey headquarters and then in the franchisee’s store. The Full-Line program specifies at least 12 days in its first session and at least six days in-store; Scoops & Sweets specifies at least four days in its first session and six days in-store.

Instruction addresses brand culture, pre-opening work, general operations, employee training, management, product ordering and delivery, marketing, merchandising, selection and pricing. Full-Line training includes production of made-in-store products. In-store work covers the point-of-sale system, daily operations and store setup while the owner trains the team. Franchisees pay travel, lodging, meals, wages and other attendance expenses, along with the opening-inventory materials allocated to training.

Before launch, Kilwins provides site selection guidelines, equipment and supplier information, a suggested opening inventory and access to its brand standards manual. It assists with an opening marketing program and inspects the store before approving it to open. Continuing resources include ongoing training as the franchisor determines appropriate and administration of the marketing fund. Additional personal assistance from an experienced representative may be available on request for a daily fee and expenses, subject to staff availability.

Why Kilwins

Kilwins offers a choice between two distinct operating formats within one specialty retail brand. The Full-Line Store suits an owner interested in the preparation and presentation of made-in-store confections alongside ice cream and chocolates. Scoops & Sweets concentrates on a narrower product assortment without a kitchen. This allows a prospective operator to consider the type of store work and product experience they want to manage.

The system combines recipes and product standards with training in store operations, merchandising and employee development. Its in-store training phase helps connect product knowledge and service procedures with the daily work of the local team. Chocolates, ice cream, confections and approved gift products provide several ways to serve customers shopping for a treat or a gift.

The owner or an approved management employee must devote full-time effort to the store. Personal day-to-day participation by the owner is encouraged, while a qualified manager can oversee operations under the franchise requirements. For someone who enjoys food retail, team leadership and face-to-face customer service, Kilwins provides a clearly defined product and operating framework.
